PROFESSIONAL OUTLOOK

I am interested in the use and effects of aesthetics in educational technology. In particular I am researching a tool that can be utilized across various platforms to test for the aesthetic value of an digital educational program and measure the effects concerning task performance, credibility, and motivation.

ABOUT JONATHAN BAKER

Who I Am

I have been in the education industry since 2009. I began my career in South Korea wherein I taught ESL classes for students, staff, and administrators. I later moved on to instructing Korean English teachers in pedagogical classes and working in human resources to recruit and train new teachers. In 2016 I joined Texas Southmost College as a full-time instructor. I have a B.A. in philosophy from Bethel College and a M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction from the American College of Education. Currently I am pursuing doctor of education in curriculum and instruction specializing in educational technology at UTRGV.

TEACHER, EWHA GIRLS' HIGH SCHOOL

March 2015 - February 2016

  • Curriculum and textbook design and implementation in English conversation classes for all 1st year (430+) students and 2nd year (250+) students on the humanities track

  • Evaluator for school wide English speech contest and essay contest

  • Designed supplemental classes on topics like English through American Television, English through Modern Media, English through Pop Songs, English through American Sitcoms, English through Dance Sport

  • Examiner for Mid-term and Final test questions

  • Chaperone for school excursion and training

  • Directed pop club in staging and choreography for school festivals

TEACHER TRAINER, SEOUL ENGLISH EDUCATION CENTER

March 2014 - February 2015

  • Composed a training course from scratch for primary and secondary teachers on listening in English

  • Became known as the “King of Preparation” teaching in a creative and fun way

  • Controlled a dance sport activity club along with a hiking club

  • Attended conferences on understanding the North Korean educational system and culture

  • Developed a textbook and handouts for classes

  • Was consistently evaluated weekly by trainees as one of the most creative teachers at SEEC

  • Designed a new portfolio project to help students gain admission to universities

  • Created and ran an English speaking contest, essay writing contest and portfolio contests

  • Constructed afterschool classes based on student demand and request

  • Devised summer supplementary classes and English camps for students to use their creativity alongside modern media and technology

  • Awarded Outstanding NSET of the Year

  • Test examiner for national and city wide certifications in English

  • Supervised Hip-Hop club and choreographed dance routine for school festival

  • Overlooked a Korean International Mock Congress club and helped them to win at regionals

February 2011 - February 2013

  • Recruited and placed over 1,000 teachers in public and private primary and secondary schools under SMOE

  • Ran and organize workshops, trainings, and orientation for Native Speakers of English Teachers (NSETs)

  • Organized a nationwide information network on tax laws, pension, health care, visa requirements, etc.

  • Worked with a team to implement certification program and raise standards for NSETs to save over $30,000,000USD

  • Cut in half the need for new teachers, grew school satisfaction with NSET’s from 80% to 90%

  • Managed the evaluations, renewals, and contract completions of 1200+ NSETs every year.

STUDENT TRAINER, SEOUL ENGLISH EDUCATION CENTER

November 2009 - January 2011

  • Helped to author, edit and produce two textbooks still in use for middle school and elementary students

  • All bi-weekly evaluations of my teaching were marked as excellent.

  • Several classes were recorded for the study and edification of other teachers working at my institution.

  • Composed, edited and produced weekly productions

  • Was selected as an evaluator for TEE-A and TEE-M as requested by S.M.O.E. for Korean English Teachers working in Seoul

  • Appointed as a reviewer of the third headquarters where I helped to set-up the competitive exam for selecting eligible candidates for appointment as public secondary school teachers of 2010
